Black Girl Fly.

It’s been months since a blog post. Since we had to go to class. Since I’ve seen my co-bloggers faces!
A few posts back I discussed the end of this blog upon graduation, but I think that was a bit premature. There was a huge elephant in the room that hung around for the past three years, and especially during our 12 days of graduation period: The Bar Exam. Looking back, I reflect on how we complained or sometimes whined about our 1Lblues. I can now say that there were no blues comparable to the process of studying for the bar exam. We parted ways and prayed for each other. We studied all over: DC, Michigan, California. We went from spending almost every day together for the past three years, to being completely spread apart.

Summer 2012 aka the Lost Summer was a summer of solitude. We sent sporadic texts and had email threads to share tips and to just keep each other motivated. We shared our worries and fears about all aspects of the exam.  Being a hermit and studying alone reminded me of how much I loved and missed my crew. There were no late night group study sessions or late night dance parties on the 4th floor of the library when delirium kicked in. But despite the loneliness, distance didn't really separate us after all. We became closer.

While awaiting results, I prayed that I would be blessed enough to type the words that appear in this post. I even drafted out a rough draft of this entry on November 5; 11 days before I found out my fate. I came across Psalm 17:17. “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.” That’s us. We’ve had about 3 years of adversity, and I’ve gained more sisters. And even if the outcome would have been different for me, I know that they would still have been there to support me. We are all BLESSED to have made it with passing results: Michigan, Check. New York AND New Jersey, Check. California, Check.

And so, even though it’s been months since we’ve seen each other, it doesn’t feel like it’s been all that long because the three of us developed real ties that bind. I have always thought that meeting Kyra and Nicole was a true blessing. Some may say it was just fate. Sims, Tull, Uwan…we just flowed together. Thank you for being there, you ladies mean the world to me. This was just one hurdle for us, and I’m sure life will throw many more our way. It just feels great to have jumped over this one together. It’s not going to be easy, but I’m sure that with more hard work and dedication, many opportunities will come along for us. The possibilities are truly endless, and the sky is the limit; watch those Black Girls Fly.

The Final Playlist: Soundtrack to 3L Year

Greetings!
I am back after a joyous and hectic week to post the soundtrack to the 2011-2012 school year. I compiled this list after flashing back in my memory to car rides to the HUSL, jammin at 3L Thursdays, solo dance sessions etc. My LONG flight(s) back to CA gave me time to reflect. So here it goes:

1) N*ggas in Paris - Jay Z & Kanye West
[I almost forgot that this album dropped in August. So people were playing it out in the beginning of the
   year.]
2) Hear My Call - Jill Scott
[This was my go to emo song. Beautiful lyrics.]
3) Take Care Album - Drizzy
[I couldn't choose one song. But the notables that were on heavy rotation during the year
were: Take Care & Practice. I flash back to days in wack CRT class jamming with Piks and Ms.
Perez shaking our invisible maracas. Oh and I people hated on Practice but I was a fan.
"Yea you workin with some ass yea, you're bad yeaaaa." Oh and shoutout to Ghostface
for his hilariously rude review of this album!]
4) Ambition Album - Wale
[Most notable, Bait and the title track. Bait is still my jam and it got me hype in the
gym while Ambition made me want to kill all my exams and graduate!]
7) Tupac Back - Rick Ross ft. Meek Mill
[This song was on heavy rotation in the gym and it always made me want to get mad and
    punch someone in the face.]
8) Bad Girls - M.I.A.
[Live fast, die young, bad girls do it well. Hot track and a great video to match. I
remember seeing it for the first time after our Superbowl party.]
9) Rack City - Tyga
[I will NOT say the line that Pikachu Sims always says when singing the ratchet version
of this song. This song is alright..wasn't my favorite but it had to make the cut.]
10) Talk That Talk Album - Rihanna
[Couldn't leave ratchet Rihanna off the playlist. Who can reminisce on 3L year without
hearing "It's not even my birthday...he want that cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake..."
Orrrr "I love it, I love it, I love it when..." yea, you know the rest. This album was
    full of jams."]
11) On The Floor - J-Lo ft. Pitbull
[ I am not longer ashamed to admit that I really like this song. I listened to it
countless times on metro rides to HUSL.]
12) Paradise - Coldplay
[I love this song so much! And Mylo Xyloto is a great album, although I wasn't sold at
     first.]
13) Camp/Culdesac/EP Albums - Childish Gambino
[This man made my school year! These albums were on HEAVY rotation, especially Les,
Letter Home, You See Me, Break (AOTL), and Firefly. Don't sleep on Childish G aka
     Donald Glover!]
14) We Are Young- FUN
["...So let's set the world on fire, we can burn brighter than the suuuuun..." The lyrics
say it all; so appropriate for graduation.]
15) Ayy Ladies - Travis Porter
[This beat goes hard. Period. And it will FOREVER remind me of a certain flashmob that
     occurred in the cafeteria :)]
16) Wobble - V.I.C.
[Clearly this song is old BUT, it still reminds me of 3L year! People will jammin at
McFaddens to this on the last day of class and the dance floor packed when this
    song dropped at Barrister's Ball.]
17) Love Out of Lust - Lykke Li
[Great song from a great album!]
18) The Party & The After Party - The Weeknd
[ This was one of my fave tracks off of House of Balloons; I appreciated the length and
the switch up in the second half of the song.]
19) Round of Applause - Wacka Flocka Flame
    [ Buss it, Buss it...]
20) PP 1.5 - Kendrick Lamar
[Alien Girl was also my jam but I decided to pick this track]
21) Up! - Loverance ft. 50 Cent
[ This was the party jam so it had to make the cut]
22) Cashin' Out - Ca$h Out
[So I had to Google this artists name several times...didn't realize his stage name was
    really Ca$h Out *scratches head*.]
23) Spend It - 2 Chainz
[It's mine, I spend it. Ha! People were always jamming when this song came on. Oh
     memories.]
24) Glad You Came - The Wanted
[Ummm this is just an infectious song as evidenced at the last 3L Thursdays of the year]
25) Girlfriend - Justin Bieber
[Had to put this track on here because it's a solid one. Cheers to Bieber for his
Justin Timberlake-esque transition cc: his more R&B feel and being on the Money Team]
26) Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepsen
[This is a recent popular wholesome jam. It's random and so catchy! Didn't know this
girls name until I Shazamed it.]

That's all folks. These songs will forever remind me of my final year of law school.

How to Make it Through the 12 Days of Graduation

The 12 days of graduation are about to begin!!!
Okay, this may be the most important post of our 3 years.  After countless exams, papers, and general law school bullshit, I have put my analytical skills to good use and developed a plan of action to make it to graduation.  It is no surprise that graduates drink.  It is no surprise that law students drink.  Therefore there is no greater compelling interest than the drinking we are embarking on for the next 12 or so days.
Be Consistent.  The key is to drink consistently.  Focus on maintaining the buzz.  You want to find the "nice" level and stay there.  Don't try to max out right away, pace yourself and envision these 12 days as one long night that won't exactly be able to account for.

Gatorade.  This will be a key recovery drink for the periods (albeit brief periods) where you actually want to drink something other than liquor.  I recommend keeping some gatorade with you at all times.

Shot glasses.  Flasks.  Keep them in the car.  Or in your purse/pocket.  Wherever.  They come in quite handy on the go.

Eat.  Do remember to eat frequently and a lot.  During periods of prolonged drinking make sure you don't miss meals.  Of course this means you gotta keep drinking to maintain your "nice" level.

Drink. Drink. Drink. Don't go for too many hours without some sort of alcoholic beverage.  Feeling hungover...have a mimosa.  Have a champagne headache...drink a beer.  That is how you do it.  You keep it going, not by drinking a lot but by drinking often.

Be responsible.  Don't end up in a roadside ditch.  Take a cab.  Have a seat.  Pack a ho bag. Do what ya gotta do to get thru.  Don't try to keep up if you can't keep up.  This isn't undergrad we've had 3 years to perfect these skills.  Let's fucking go!

The Bumblebee Crew

This flashback Friday features a classic picture from our last round of finals during 1L year. Pikachu Sims, Ni-Cole, and I have been called an array of names to identify our “trio.” This includes: Destiny’s Child, Snap, Crackle & Pop, Total, Three Blind Mice etc. This time, I was ousted from the group… Mr. Duncan, Pikachu & Ni-Cole all came ready to study in bright striped yellow shirts. This was not planned of course and that’s what made it hilarious. I dubbed them the Bumblebee Crew and then I realized that we were spending entirely too much time together because of finals.

Flashback Friday: The iPhone Biggie

So the iPad came out during 1L year. I remember hearing about the concept and thinking that it was a bit silly. It just reminded me of a large iPhone so I dubbed it the iPhone Biggie. Mr. Duncan was HYPE as evidenced in the photo. When the iPad was officially released, and Mr. Duncan got his hands on it, we all took turns looking at it. Naturally, we held it up to our ears and pretended to be talking on the phone. We each got a pic, but Ni-Cole’s was my fave. And like clockwork, the iPhone Biggie ended up being a huge success.

Doing Theeeeee Most & My 2nd Twitterversary

I'm literally on bed rest right now. This weekend...well the past weekends have been dos mucho. I have so much work to do and I have not been very productive. Does being a 3L make one allergic to school work? Perhaps. I'm trying to get my bearings academically and finish strong and I WILL pull it together eventually....

On a social note, I've partied myself to sickness. My immune system is all the way turnt down and I am driving the struggle bus. We all hit up the Beacon on Saturday and saw the whole school out. Mind you, I knew I had the sniffles but still went out and probably infected some people (my bad). Yesterday, I woke up feeling terrible and I was sure that I was going nowhere. Then I saw tweets...and heard from Ni-Cole...and remembered that this is my last time to enjoy so I said YOLO and popped some Day Quil and stepped out. I was upset that the open bar at Bar 7 was only for Crown Royal but I made it work and I must say that it worked wonders for my sinuses. We also ended up at Josephines which was interesting to say the least. It's all a blur and I'm feeling the repercussions of my ways. But I already know the rest of the semester will be like this. I do not know how my classmates and I will be alive after exams. We have from May 3rd -May 12th (graduation) to be reckless and I just don't know if I'll survive. Like, I'm dead serious. Guess I'll worry about when the time comes.

Oh and enjoy a ridiculous pic of a text that I got from some random man back in 2010. Clearly he got no response..that grammar EEK. It was my first twit pic! I used to be known as @UdemeRefusestoGetTwitter but my people put me on game and life has been funnier ever since.
